Modifying mail templates is a headache for several reasons. But if you want to do so, one of the easiest ways is by adding a new agent. This adds a new choice to the pull-down Action menu. Since this does not change any existing forms, views or agents, it is a fairly clean way to modify the mail template. Of course, this will only work if you can get the feature you want from an agent.
