Can LEI provide strong authentication?

Security question: Is LEI able to handle certificates (x.509) and/or keys in order to provide strong authentication for data transfer from system to system, or can it only exchange user IDs and passwords? Many thanks in advance.
LEI 6.x can use certificates and private/public key encryption, which can be specified in the Notes Connection document. If you are using LEI 3.x, you are limited to the User IDs and passwords.
