Sequential Numbering has been difficult within NOtes for a number of reasons. the biggest problem is that multiple documents are created during the same relative time periods. It is better to use @Unique or a custom time stamp to create a tracking number for documents. If you allow users to generate documents on multiple replicas of an application, keeping the numbers sequential is almost impossible.
If you must use sequential numbering, I have found the best method is to keep track of the number in a profile document or similar unique document. When a document is created, don't get the next sequence number wait until the document is being saved. I prefer to use the QuerySave Event to get the current sequence number from the profile document, increment it and save the profile. The the incremented value can be used as the sequence number.
