Here is an answer supplied by Frederic Dahm of Lotus, who helps me out with
these questions from time to time...
The question you sent me is a recurring theme.
If the people are going to use Notes, then a passthru server is the easiest
and best course of action.
If the people are going to want to connect to any given ISP, but are going
to do it using a specific client machine (like a laptop), then a VPN
solution can be used, which is a secure point-to-point communication.
If we are talking about a kiosk type of connection, where poeple want to
read their mail from anywhere and with any machine, then a reverse proxy
solution is usually best. There are a number of reverse proxy solutions,
from Netscape to IBM.
If it is only a mail solution that is required (with POP3 or IMAP4 in
mind), the relay host is a possibility, but it would depend on the exact
scenario and the nature of the information being exchanged, since it would
also be more difficult to ensure that sensitive e-mail doesn't get sent
inadvertantly with regular e-mail.
Regards,
Frederic
