Check the drivers for your video camera. When it is connected, check that the camera appears in your device list as an "Imaging Device." I had similar problems with my Sharp and Sony cameras until Windows XP identified them as imaging devices, which I was then able to fix by getting drivers off the manufacturers Web site.
I personally use Sony, Sharp and Dolphin brands digital cameras successfully through Sametime. In addition, I have set up numerous other brands of webcams for clients.
