QUESTION POSED ON: 15 March 2005
My company is concerned about access to sensitive data on their applications. I am trying to explain Notes security/architecture. They think if someone steals an NSF they can pull data out of fields from a back door. Is there some document that I can reference to help them understand this? In DB2, they can encrypt data. Is Notes encryption the same thing? Thanks.

EXPERT RESPONSE
Yes, if someone steals a copy of a standard NSF file, they might be able to read the data in it, if they are reasonably clever. To prevent this, Notes/Domino contains a "database encryption" feature. Also known as "local encryption." There are three different strengths of encryption available, and the feature is very secure.
