QUESTION POSED ON: 07 June 2005
I have a Notes application originally built in 4.6. The application has a mail function in LotusScript which creates an Outlook e-mail and attaches a Notes document link (ndl) to the e-mail. A user who was recently "upgraded" to Notes 5.01 is now getting an "Unable to open file" error message when he tries to use the mail function. The user does not have administrative access to his computer; when he was temporarily given administrative access, the mail function worked correctly. Is there a solution to this issue, short of giving the user full administrative rights to his computer?

Notes 5.0.1 and workstation restrictions did not work well. Notes didn't handle not having admin rights to your machine very well until much later versions of Notes, along the lines of 5.0.9a. If possible, get the Notes installation up to 5.0.13 or later. . .preferably some release of 6.5. Remember that Notes 6.5 is not supported on NT Workstation.

MEMBER FEEDBACK TO THIS ASK THE EXPERT Q&A:

I'm surprised that the recommendation is to install 5.0.13 client. This will not handle 'mailto' links on Web pages -- it crashes the client.
