QUESTION POSED ON: 10 September 2001

We are a fairly large company of about 10.000 employees. We are running Domino 5.08 on Unix and NT. Also planing iNotes. We are, for the moment, looking for a secure way to read mail from any ISP. We've considered reversed proxies and relay host on the DMZ.

Here is an answer supplied by Frederic Dahm of Lotus, who helps me out with these questions from time to time...

The question you sent me is a recurring theme.

If the people are going to use Notes, then a passthru server is the easiest and best course of action.

If the people are going to want to connect to any given ISP, but are going to do it using a specific client machine (like a laptop), then a VPN solution can be used, which is a secure point-to-point communication.

If we are talking about a kiosk type of connection, where poeple want to read their mail from anywhere and with any machine, then a reverse proxy solution is usually best. There are a number of reverse proxy solutions, from Netscape to IBM.

If it is only a mail solution that is required (with POP3 or IMAP4 in mind), the relay host is a possibility, but it would depend on the exact scenario and the nature of the information being exchanged, since it would also be more difficult to ensure that sensitive e-mail doesn't get sent inadvertantly with regular e-mail.

Regards,
Frederic
