QUESTION POSED ON: 06 November 2001

I am dealing with a problem that has been discussed many times but would like to get your advice on how to handle it. The manager of INet Development at my company, which includes Notes/Domino and Microsoft development, is wanting to get a matrix together to see what development platform is better. I know, and stand firmly by, the statement that what you can do in Microsoft development technologies you can do in Notes Domino. I also know that each have their place in the market. My question is, how do I get the manager to understand that the "matrix" idea is really not valid? It's like comparing apples to oranges. The real choice in Notes/Domino development vs. Microsoft development is just that, a choice. The question should not be which is better but which are you more comfortable with or which one do you prefer. The point I am trying to make to her is that you can do what ever you want with either one, so just use them both and when an application is on the table look at them both and decide. Does that make sense?

It does make sense. Another big factor is cost of ownership and development costs. SearchDomino has published some good articles comparing Microsoft office/exchange to Notes (favourably for notes), and Microsoft has done the same things for Microsoft. You could visit the Lotus web site to get some good "proof" information of why Notes/Domino is a good choice for a development environment. I think you could build a case that a Playstation 2 could be a good user workstation if you really wanted to so your best friend is information. Go get it and compile it well and you should be able to make a convincing case for Domino.
