QUESTION POSED ON: 18 February 2002
How can I stop spam mails which are passed through my Lotus Domino Server?

>

First, let me modify the goal you are trying to achieve.... I define spam as "unwanted, unsolicited email". Given this definition, it is impossible to PREVENT spam. A more realistic goal is to REDUCE the amount of spam you get. Having said that, let's look at how you can achieve this new goal.

Domino includes some limited anti-spam controls built into the product. These are located in the Public Directory (names.nsf). Go to the view Server / Configurations. Open the configuration document for the server you want to control. Open the tab Router-SMTP / Restrictions & Controls / Restrictions. (And the SMTP Inbound Controls tab.) You will see a number of options here. For details about using these options, see Domino Administration Help / Index / Spamming / Preventing.

For more effective anti-spam control, you might also consider some 3rd-party add-on products. Some of these include far more email filtering control than Domino has. Several of these products are Mail Attender from Sherpa Software, Mail Warden from BVRP, and Iron Mail from CipherTrust. You can find more information on my web site http://www.DominoSecurity.org. Go to the home page, scroll down a bit, then click on Products.
