QUESTION POSED ON: 08 March 2004
When I try to open mail1.box or mail2.box from Domino administrator, I receive the following error on our server: "unable to open the view mail: b-tree structure is invalid."

I get the same error after running compact, updall and fixup. Both mailboxes are large (more than 350 MB) and contain more than 900 dead or held messages.

This is our main SMTP/Notes server, which is our public facing mail server. It passes e-mail to approximately 60 other servers in and around Australia. What should I do next?

EXPERT RESPONSE
I'm not surprised that you're having problems, since 350 MB is very large for a mail.box file. I suggest that you schedule a time when you can shut down the server and have all mail routed. Then, delete the mail.box files and let the server recreate them. After you've done that, try to keep the mail.box files clean of dead mail. There is a simple agent you can use to do this automatically; it is available in the Notes.net Sandbox.

Finally, make sure the nightly mail.box file compacts are working properly.
