Notes/Domino 7 is months from official release, but tips, advice and workarounds for the upgrade are already out there. Admin2005 had an entire block of sessions devoted to new and enhanced features in Release 7. Here are excerpts from three sessions.
Upgrading to 7
Changes to Notes/Domino, which IBM Lotus Software head of sales Ed Brill presented in a session called Exploring the Benefits of Notes/Domino 7, range from Mozilla support and the removal of legacy code to stronger mail controls and a new Room Reservation task.
However, the beta 3 version of Release 7 contains several "known issues," said Jessica Couto, V.P. of Technology, Computer Focus Inc.
For example, when creating a new Policy document, "New Mail Policy" is not a selection choice. In addition, certain error message -- such as the "validating agent execution access" that pops up when the access server field is empty -- may be misleading to some admins. "It doesn't tell you what it's doing, what it's getting at," Couto said. "A lot of people are going to get that error message because we're used to leaving that [access server field] blank."
Notes 7 Calendar
Many of what Susan Bulloch, field support engineer, IBM, called the Calendar's "revolutionary" improvements center around resource management, which is handled through a new Room and Resource Manager Task. Users can be reminded that they booked a room for a meeting, can generate a list of preferred meeting rooms and can be blocked from reserving the cushiest room for the next three years.
Some calendar changes simply reflect the product's evolution, Bulloch said. These include a cleanup tool, the option to collapse the MiniView and greater administrative control over mail settings. "You can set them, lock them down and let them go," Bulloch said. "You've got a little more control. You've got happier users. You've got a better user interface."
Domino Web Access in Release 7
In the newest version of DWA, administrators will benefit from a new activity log feature called Domino.DWA.Request (which dumps information into its own database), better mail threads and improved browser cache management, said Rob Novak, president, SNAPPS. In addition, there are fewer notes.ini settings, in part because all the Instant Messaging settings are now in the Server Configuration document.
Novak said he liked the notes.ini changes. "This is a boon because it was difficult to monitor which settings were where, especially if you were running multiple versions [of Domino]." However, he added, "If you have a mixed environment or are converting users [to an updated version of Domino], you need to continue notes.ini settings for each version."
