With Notes/Domino 7 due in mid-September, it's safe to say most Domino administrators have their Notes calendars flagged – not just to remind them about the upgrade but to warn them about the barrage of users' questions that will likely follow. Fortunately, there are already some tips and tricks out there to show admins how to make the most of the upgrade's new features.
Alan Lepofsky, a member of IBM's business partner organization, has compiled a few administrator tips on his blog, including a calendar cleanup tip and a way to see if mail messages have been signed or encrypted. Of particular interest is this tip, which lets administrators open another user's mail. Lepofsky's step-by-step instructions include plenty of screen shots, so admins not running Release 7 in beta can see what they're missing.
IBM's developerWorks site, naturally, also offers a few tips for Release 7. This article, for example, highlights Domino Domain Monitoring, a new feature in 7 that will let administrators watch their systems for performance issues.
And in this tip, admins can learn how to use another addition to Domino 7, the message disclaimer, to reduce the amount of spam users open.
A third option for tips is Lotus Notes/Domino FAQ, which has Notes advice dating back to 1996. The area of the site devoted to Release 7 offers a wide range of information, from an agent that will let administrators determine who deleted a file to a link to online training courses.
For administrators who prefer news to tips, IBM's Notes/Domino 7 Public Beta page provides a list of additions and modifications in Notes/Domino 7, a place to send feedback to IBM and an opportunity to download beta 3. (A fourth and final beta version should be available sometime next month.)
More specifics about what's new in beta 3 can be found in two articles written by Lotus content developer Dick McCarrick. One article focuses specifically on Domino, while the second looks at modifications of Notes and Domino Designer.
Meanwhile, erstwhile blogger Ed Brill, worldwide head of sales and marketing for Notes/Domino, has pointed out a few upgrade highlights on the Notes/Domino 7 beta section of his Web site. Brill's entries include descriptions of the calendar filter and the pop-up window that warn users before they download e-mail attachments.
