IBM has made a series of management changes, including that of IBM Lotus general manager Ambuj Goyal being named general manager of IBM's Information Management Solutions, replacing Janet Perna, who is retiring.
IBM has informed SearchDomino.com that Mike Rhodin, the current Vice President of Development for Workplace Portal and Collaboration Products at IBM Lotus, will replace Goyal.
In his previous role, Rhodin had responsibility for development of the Lotus product portfolio, which includes WebSphere Portal, Lotus Notes/Domino and the rest of the Lotus product line. He also led the Lotus worldwide technical support organization and was responsible for the Lotus customer satisfaction initiatives.
Before taking his current assignment, Rhodin led IBM's development efforts for Pervasive Computing from November 1999 through January 2003. His responsibilities included the development of the WebSphere Everyplace family of offerings, WebSphere Portal, the WebSphere Voice offerings as well as new embedded software componentry.
Prior to his role with Pervasive, Rhodin served as Director of IBM's Server Solutions in SWG. From the point of entering management in 1989, he has held numerous software development management assignments including, communications servers and networking software technology.
Peter O'Kelly, a senior analyst with the Application Platform Strategies service of IT infrastructure research and advisory firm Burton Group, called Rhodin "top-tier," and predicted there would be no significant disruption at the IBM Lotus unit. Of Goyal's move, he noted, "Having an exceptionally strong IBM Lotus advocate within the DB2 (and broader information management) group will also be helpful for Workplace."
Perna has long been one of the most prominent executives in high technology. IBM's Information Management Solutions Group had relational data base revenue estimated by Gartner at $2.6 billion in 2004.
Goyal began his work at IBM as a research staff member. He subsequently served as vice president of Services and Software, and director for Computer Sciences. He came to further prominence as CTO for IBM middleware operations, including WebSphere and MQ.
His main research interests were high-performance systems, databases and distributed systems. His early work in scalable databases became part of IBM's Universal Database (DB2) offering.
The Reuters story says that IBM has also reorganized its Global Services business, naming a team of three executives -- Ginni Rometty, Mike Daniels and Bob Moffat -- to run it. All three executives will report directly to IBM Chairman and Chief Executive Sam Palmisano. Global Services is a services and consulting business that brought in roughly $50 billion in 2004, a year in which IBM reported total revenue of $96.5 billion in 2004.
IBM also announced that John Joyce, the executive formerly in charge of Global Services, a 30-year veteran of IBM and its former chief financial officer, has left IBM to join private equity firm Silver Lake Partners, both companies confirmed.
