IBM and Dassault Systemes have integrated IBM Lotus Notes and Dassault Systemes 3D XML technology. An upcoming release of the 3D XML Player will fully support Notes, according to the companies.

Dassault, based in France, produces "product management lifecycle" (PLM) software for industrial processes and information cataloging. Over the years, its 3D vision software has evolved to support broader uses. While 3D model development is still a high-end exercise, Dassault and others have found ways to use XML and clever rendering to achieve less expensive desktop 3D viewers.

Now, with a 3D XML player embedded in the Lotus Notes client, users outside the engineering department can share product and business information delivered via e-mail.

The Dassault release will run as a plug-in to the Notes client. "Within Notes mail, the user can pull up an e-mail with a 3D object attached," said Joe Leake, business unit executive for business development in IBM's Lotus software group. Users can manipulate the angle of view on these images, he added. He indicated that IBM is looking to use this technology with Workplace in the future, expanding the technology into other solutions areas. ((Content component not found.))

New dimensional rendering technologies have also been coming out of IBM competitor Microsoft, including the Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation (a set of APIs), Atlas (a prototype tool kit) and XAML (the extensible application markup language). In April, Dassault said it would work to support Microsoft's XAML format in its 3D XML format.
