A reader – let's call him Frank -- recently contacted SearchDomino.com with a problem. The situation is this: Frank's company, which is a Microsoft Outlook user, was acquired. The parent company is a Notes shop, and uses a hosted service for its Notes/Domino messaging architecture.

The two messaging products worked well together until a year ago, when the Outlook users, who were pulling their e-mail from the host's Domino server and POP 3 account, started getting 550 errors. E-mail delivery got so bad at one point that Frank's employees began to tell customers that if they were sending an important e-mail, they should either call ahead and let the recipient know that, or else fax or Fedex it.

Things got even worse when the hosting company upgraded to Domino 6.5. Now the 550 error messages were joined with duplicate and triplicate copies of e-mail. According to Frank, someone at the hosting service told him, "Notes and Outlook do not work well together."

However, at this point, the hosting service enlisted the aid of a Notes consultant, and some of the problems were resolved. As of right now, "the situation has stabilized somewhat," Frank says.

Still, Frank is having second thoughts about moving his company to Notes, despite the mandate from above. "I'm hesitant to move from an environment where things worked great to an environment that seems too unstable," he told SearchDomino.com.

What Frank wants to know is this: Is what he was told by the hosting service true? Do Outlook and Notes NOT work well together? Yes, he knows the literature on both the Lotus and Microsoft sites says the two products should interoperate just fine. But Frank says, "I would prefer to hear from an expert working in the field rather than marketing literature."

Have any SearchDomino readers encountered this situation before? How did you resolve it? Does anyone have any advice for Frank? If so, send a Soundoff in reply to this article or e-mail editor@searchdomino.com and put "Notes/Outlook" in the subject line.
