Zollar out, veteran IBM exec takes over at Lotus

Al Zollar will no longer head up the Lotus Software unit and will be replaced by another long-time IBM executive.

Ambuj Goyal, a 21-year Big Blue veteran, will take over at Lotus. The 46-year-old Goyal currently serves as general manager of IBM's Solutions and Strategy division where he is responsible for WebSphere business integration and setting IBM's software strategy.

Lotus' manager of communications Mary Rose Greenough said a timetable for the executive switch has yet to be decided. Goyal, who currently works out of IBM's Somers, N.Y. offices, addressed Lotus' staff today at their Cambridge, Mass. headquarters.

Greenough described Goyal as a "tremendously respected business leader in IBM's software group."

Both Zollar and Goyal are expected to be at Lotusphere, the annual user conference that kicks off Jan. 26.

Zollar, who has spent roughly three years as Lotus general manager and more than two decades as an IBM executive, will take over as general manager of IBM's iSeries server group.

During Zollar's stint at Lotus, he helped launch the latest iteration of Notes and Domino and introduced Lotus' knowledge management tools.

Greenough said the move is "seen as a good opportunity for Al."
