IBM Lotus Software announced yesterday its acquisition of Aptrix, a Web content management provider based in Sydney, Australia. The deal, which gives IBM full ownership of Aptrix's tools for creating, publishing and archiving Web content for corporate intranets and extranets, will help fill a gap in Lotus' Workplace on-demand collaboration package, executives said.

The acquisition of the Aptrix tools allows IBM to expand its on-demand architecture with Aptrix's content management software, which can be integrated into Lotus Domino and Lotus Workplace. Lotus Workplace allows on-demand collaboration by providing portal-based access to several IBM technologies, including Lotus software, WebSphere and DB2.

"Now, when a customer is looking to create a dynamic work place where processes are integrated, content is a key element, and it can be delivered on that platform," said Ambuj Goyal, IBM Lotus Software general manager.

IBM Lotus plans to offer the tools in the third quarter as a Lotus Workplace component called Lotus Workplace Content Development.

Aptrix's core products work in the Domino and J2EE environments. The Aptrix tools will help customers create and manage Web-based content for their intranets and extranets.

Aptrix, a longtime business partner of IBM Lotus Software, already shares a customer base with IBM. "We bring new clients and old clients -- a solid base," said Adam Ginsburg, Aptrix's North American general manager. "For non-technical people out there, it will make a big change in the market."

Aptrix will become part of IBM's software unit, and IBM will integrate Aptrix's 40 employees, Goyal said. Pricing information for the new tools and financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
