Demand for antispam solutions grew by 50% over the last 12 months, according to new research by Radicati Group Inc. The study also predicts that the number of spam messages sent globally will increase 115%, from 15 billion in 2003 to 35 billion in 2004.

And spam sent via instant message software will triple from 400 million messages in 2003 to 1.2 billion in 2004, the research found.

The study, "Antispam Market Trends 2004-2008," provides market forecasts focusing on technology trends and emerging legislation for the antispam market. Radicati said that the research is based on data collected from vendors, service providers, corporate customers and consumers through interviews and surveys conducted during 2004.

Radicati expects the market for antispam products and services to top $979 million in 2004, an increase of more than 50% from 2003. If nothing is done to curtail spam, Radicati said, that number will grow to more than $1.74 billion by 2008.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based research firm also found that in most cases, both corporate and consumer mailboxes are protected by more than one antispam filter. By the end of 2004, the group expects 55% of all mailboxes to be protected by at least one antispam application.
