The latest version of iAnywhere Solutions Inc.'s Pylon Application Server lets developers use their expertise in Domino Designer to extend Domino applications to mobile devices.

Pylon Application Server 6.0, which the Dublin, Calif.-based company released today, allows programmers to essentially create a mobile version of their application that is "basically synchronized between the [mobile] device and the back-end server," according to iAnywhere senior product manager Diana Ungersma.

The new edition features a Web-based architecture, client-side business logic support, scanning and business application management. Ungersma said iAnywhere is also emphasizing automatic updates and streamlined synchronization.

All updates and changes made on the server will instantly be available to mobile devices in the field, Ungersma said. Companies can also deploy other non-Domino Web-based applications, such as Microsoft Outlook, using a single server.

The release of 6.0 also introduces JavaScript support and will enable client-side business logic, Ungersma said. Users will now have the information in their mobile devices validated by an on-device application immediately as it is entered, streamlining information that is synchronized with back-end systems.

The Pylon name has been around since 1996, when iAnywhere launched a Palm Pilot-to-Lotus Notes integration product. Today, the company has products that work in Microsoft Exchange environments and offers desktop-based synchronization.

With the announcement of Pylon application Server 6, iAnywhere is targeting large companies with a significant investment in custom-built Domino-based applications, Ungersma said. Other groups that she said have shown interest are CRM application vendors that are selling Domino-based applications to customers who have started asking for mobile versions of the software.

In fact, one of the early adopters of Pylon Application Server 6.0 is Relavis Corp., a N.Y.-based vendor that sells a CRM suite based on Notes/Domino.

Most Relavis users operate remotely on applications built on Domino. After evaluating a number of vendors specializing in mobile solutions, Relavis selected the Pylon server line as the next building block for its applications, said Joe Lee, the company's vice president of strategic planning and product management.

Pylon Application Server 6.0 costs $149 per seat. Special promotional pricing is available for customers who are interested in purchasing both Pylon Application Server and iAnywhere's mobile e-mail product, Pylon Anywhere.
