IBM Lotus adds piece to Workplace pie |

This morning IBM Lotus announced a new component to its J2EE-based Lotus Workplace strategy and said it would detail additional capabilities later this week when it formally takes the wraps off the latest iteration of the Workplace product line.
Dubbed Team Collaboration, the software encompasses several Lotus offerings already widely used, including those for instant messaging, Web conferencing, collaborative workspaces, threaded discussions and document management.
Organizations can choose to deploy the Domino version of the products or J2EE-based components that they can embed in other applications or business processes, executives said. For instance, companies may choose to attach instant messaging capabilities within CRM software.
"We're really taking a sort of bifurcated view," said Mike Loria, IBM Lotus director of advanced collaboration. "Part of our story at Lotus is building a nicely integrated platform, as well as components that people can deploy elsewhere."
Earlier this year, IBM Lotus delivered the first product in its Workplace line, Workplace Messaging, a Web-based e-mail platform designed for the so-called "deskless" worker. It runs on the WebSphere application server, uses DB2 as a message store and requires no desktop installation.
IBM Lotus followed up by delivering content management capabilities as a result of this summer's acquisition of Aptrix.
Loria stressed that simplicity drives Workplace. "I have a need; I have a business problem. How quickly can I respond to that business problem?" he said.
Along with Team Collaboration, IBM Lotus is also releasing some enhancements to the software itself. These include a redesigned user interface for Web conferencing meeting presenters.
On Wednesday, the company is scheduled to unveil Lotus Workplace Version 1.1, which is expected to include new collaborative components.
