BlackBerry maker denied appeal
BlackBerry email device-maker Research In Motion lost an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court that sought to put a long-running patent lawsuit on hold. The suit and an infringement case were brought against Canada-based RIM by patent-holding company NTP. RIM is appealing an infringement verdict to the high court and wanted the lawsuit stalled while the appeal was pending. That verdict has raised the prospect that RIM could be forced to stop selling its hand-held devices and wireless e-mail service in the U.S. A lower court will consider Research In Motion's bid to enforce an apparent settlement reached this year calling for a $450 million payment to NTP, which says the terms of the deal were never finalized.News | 27 Oct 2005
