Update to Exchange Server 2003 Connector for Lotus Notes

Whether you're in the middle of a migration or dealing with a merger situation, if you have Lotus Notes Domino and Microsoft Outlook and Exchange Server co-existing, you should know that there has been a recent revision to the Microsoft Exchange 2003 Connector for Lotus Notes. Dated June 6, 2007 (version 06.05.7917), the update addresses problems that crop up when Lotus Domino Server is used as an incoming SMTP gateway.

This problem is described in detail in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 918306, "An incorrect address is displayed when an external user replies to a message that was routed from the Internet to an Exchange 2003 server by using the Domino messaging system," and includes symptoms like email addresses being mangled. For example, the return email addresses for external users might show up as username@domain.net@notesdomain -- which obviously can't be properly replied to.

need to download and install the hotfix, and then edit the LME-NOTES section of the EXCHCONN.INI file as described in the KB article.

The edits described force the connector to save email addresses from Lotus Domino-routed messages in SMTP format. Future service packs for Exchange 2003 (post-SP2) should contain this fix automatically, but it's not clear if the setting changes in question would need to be manually applied. (Other addressed problems in this fix include the way Unicode is supported between Lotus Notes Domino and Microsoft Exchange Server.)
