How to upgrade to Lotus Notes 8 and retain Lotus Notes 7

Note: Running two different releases of a Lotus Notes client on one workstation is not a supported configuration.

First, assume that Lotus Notes 7 is installed in these Windows client locations: C:\Notes for programs and C:\Notes\Data for the data directory.

If you want to save your existing Notes 7 client binaries, but still want to share your data directory, then you must complete the following steps.

1. Copy the existing Notes directory and subdirectories to a Lotus Notes 7 directory.
2. To create a new desktop shortcut to run the Notes 7 version, create a copy of your existing Notes desktop shortcut icon, right-click on the icon and choose "Properties."
3. Change the Shortcut tab Target value to <path>\notes7\notes.exe =\notes\notes.ini. This indicates Notes 7 executables using the Notes 8 Notes.ini file and data.
4. Change the Start in value to <path>\notes7.
5. Change the Title (General tab) to Notes 7.
6. Click OK to close the properties dialog.
7. Install the Notes 8 client.

The Lotus Notes 8 install will upgrade your original Notes directory, as well as subdirectories to Notes 8. This will leave the Notes 7 copy untouched.

steps:

Note: It's a good idea to upgrade Lotus Notes clients after upgrading your Domino servers, so that your Lotus Notes users can take advantage of the new features that exist on the server.
