Laptop users find large(ish) databases difficult when it comes to replicating and using them. This tip can speed up both.
It also works on desktops !
Set the Do Not Maintain Unread Marks feature in the Database Advanced Properties. This cuts down the amount of work your p.c. has to do on the database.
You must Compact the database after setting this else the change will not be permanent.(Two weeks of hair pulling finding that one out!)
It is also advisable to Compact the workspace as this seems to speed things up as well.
Right click on the Workspace select Workspace Properties and click the Settings tab. Ensure the Cache setting is to use no more than 5MB (this does "drift" so check regularly) then Compact the workspace.
The fact the the workspace may be using more space than you have allocated is not a problem, this figure actually shows the size of two files, cache.dsk and desktop5.dsk, not just the workspace.
This sped up the use of a 0.75 GB database significantly and does seem to have affected the replication as well. Good news for our remote users.
