Database maintenance at the desktop

Databases get corrupted, that's a fact. We all know how to perform database maintenance on the server using fixup, updall and so on. These utilities can also be used to perform database repair on your local Lotus Notes databases.

Grab a copy of these very utilities from your NT or 2000 Domino server. They are called nfixup, ncompact, and nupdall. These handy programs are not installed with a standard workstation setup of Notes.

Carry the EXEs with you on troubleshooting calls or place them on a secure site ready for download. At the client's desk, exit Lotus Notes, backup the database, launch a DOS Command prompt and use the programs as described in the Administrator's User's Guide. Keep in mind that I strongly recommend using a methodical troubleshooting methodology prior to resorting to fixes. Many problems can be identified and resolved using simpler methods.

1. Always check the local log.nsf for recorded errors.
2. Exit Lotus Notes and delete the cache.dsk file (always a suspect).
3. Compact the Workspace.
4. Re-create a new bookmark.nsf database (by delete it and renaming desktop5.dsk to desktop.dsk ... a handy previous searchDomino tip).
5. If the problem is a local replica, re-create the replica from scratch.
6. You can always resort to redoing the local setup or re-installing. Keep in mind, that I recommend to delete all files from c:notes before re-installing or upgrading. Programs no longer in use can often remain and cause problems.
