During an upgrade, this Lotus administrator was stabbed in the back by a double agent. Our hero was almost tarred and feathered by the IT staff when they had to manually reassign document locations for the entire company.
At my previous company, we had just made a purchase of another company. The site we visited had extremely old servers running Domino 4.X and Windows NT 4, so we decided to just purchase new servers and do a full migration. We had the entire process automated from the backend, and had one last concern to worry about: those location documents in the client PCs.
The desktop support manager and the IT managers on site were hounding us to make the migration as seamless as possible and asked if there was a way we could fix everyone's location document with a script. So, I began to give it some thought.
They kept their data directories on a network drive so they could get the "roaming" feel in the company. So we decided to map to the root of the share that had everyone's data directories on it. It was pretty much systematic, so a simple agent was created to read the name of the directory, look it up in the NAB for the username and mail file location, drop the new ID file in the directory, rename the old ID file, update the names.nsf location document with the ID name and the mail file.
One small problem with the agent went undetected though...
I managed to leave the mail file and server lookups outside the loop, which set everyone in the building pointing to the same mail file. Monday morning, we had a few calls. The IT staff spent the entire day mapping to drives and manually setting the location document, as they had locked me out of the building at that point. It was a very funny but important lesson to be learned.
