We often have users getting the following error message: From troubleshooting this often with IBM, several scenarios seem to cause this.

  1. Internet Explorer version. Microsoft Internet Explorer must be at version 5.0.1 or higher. If it is not, this message may appear.

  2. Windows Updates. If you have recently applied any Windows Updates (particularly for Internet Explorer) then this could be a factor. In Add/Remove programs for Internet Explorer you should be able to "Change/Remove" and be able to roll it back to the previous configuration.

  3. User has a "send copy to" rule. If this is the case, there is help in Lotus Technote 1104774, 'Send Copy To' rule causes hang in iNotes Web Access 6.x. If the DisplayCopyTo_Icon field is set to a value of "1" then iNotes may have trouble displaying the data.

  4. Corrupt mail file. It is possible that the mail file is corrupt. Try the standards -- fixup, updall, compact and even convert (to make sure that all template data is consistent).

bling HTTP 1.1 in the browser. We've had similar problems here that we had to address this way. Our workstations were NT4 or Win2K, browsers were IE 5.5 or 6, servers were Domino 6.5 on Win2K with Domino Web Access 6.5 templates.

I had this very problem and the folks at Lotus said it was a result of the GZIP compression. The fix was as follows, but before anyone tries this on their own, they should still contact Lotus Support to see if they think it may be the cause.

This problem has been reported to Lotus Software Quality Engineering. There are no current plans to address this issue.

In order to disable GZIP compression by the Domino server, add the following line to the server's Notes.ini file:

iNotes_wa_GZIP_Disable=1

The faulty setting is found in the Server Configuration document under the Domino Web Access tab. The Other Settings section contains the "Compress HTTP Response Data" field. This field is visible only from the 6.5 or higher Notes Client.

This warning is not as tough to get around as previously reported. I find that a clearing of Downloaded Program Files including offline files, setting Security to Medium (for the time being if needed) and setting the Advanced tab back to Default will correct whatever the update to Internet Explorer changed. This is all done from the Internet Options of course but has proven to work time and again. I base this on IE 5.5 or higher.
