There are two steps involved:
- On the replication page, mark the Lotus Notes database that needs to be updated most frequently as "high priority." In my case, I marked my Lotus Notes mail database and my outbox (mail.box) as "high priority."
I leave my other Lotus Notes databases that don't need to be updated as often at their default replication priorities ("medium priority"). These databases include: my Domino Directory catalog and a local replica of my application database.
- In the location document, enable "Additional interval for high priority database" to replicate every 15 minutes, and for the normal replication to occur every hour. You can modify the replication times to suit your requirements.
These steps will make the replication of the less-used Lotus Notes database occur only every hour, as opposed to the more frequently updated Lotus Notes mail database which replicates every 15 minutes.
The bottom line is that replication is invoked based on Lotus Notes database requirements, which in turn translates to more efficient replication.
I have two recommendations:
- Modify the location document so that the option in the mail tab titled, "Transfer outgoing mail if X messages are pending" is set to "1." This way, any mail that is created is sent immediately, rather than being delayed for 15 minutes or according to the high priority replication interval setting.
- If using local mail replicas, try to stress the importance of replicating before shutting down Lotus Notes if they've just sent an email. This especially important if users just set up their Out of Office agent. Frequently, Lotus Notes users will shut down Lotus Notes or their machine before those changes have had the chance to replicate to the Lotus Domino Server.
These are two tips and most common pitfalls that I'd recommend after six years of using local replicas by default within our company -- even for desktop machines.
