Checking a mail file for corruption

Is there anything in the mail file that indicates a corruption?

You can always check for white space (unused space) on the database properties. If it drops below 90%, compact the database. Otherwise, if it is a server based file, the log will show errors if the database is corrupt. If you run utilities such as updall ?r, fixup, and compact regularly, you will be able to avoid most corruptions, and you will find others early in the game.
