Converting a database from 20 to 41 ODS

We have an R4 database (i.e. db.ns4) on our R5 servers that we would like to convert from a 20, to a 41 ODS. When I change the file name to db.nsf and run compact, the ODS does not change? The database is almost a Gb in size so I don't want to create a new replica if I don't have to, any idea's?
When the ODS is converted from 4 to 5, a copy style compact is done. In order for the copy style compact to work, there must be enough disk space to make a complete copy of the database during the compact process. If there is not enough disk space, the compact will fail and the ODS will not be changed.
