What are some things that a Web administrator can do to make the error 404 message more user friendly? How could they be eliminated all together?
You can customize error messages by creating custom forms with one of the following names.
Form Name: $$ReturnAuthenticationFailure Condition: The user's name and password cannot be verified. Form Name: $$ReturnAuthorizationFailure Condition: The user does not have a sufficient access level for the database. Form Name: $$ReturnDocumentDeleted Condition: A document was successfully deleted. Form Name: $$ReturnGeneralError Condition: Any other error condition has occurred.
Just create the form with that name and alias and then add an editable text field named "MessageString" that will hold the error message. You can add any other text or design elements that you would like to be displayed with the error message that you specified in "MessageString."
If you also want to display something as a result of an error that is not a "Web Server" error, but more of an application specific error, like when a user forgot to fill in a field, use validation and/or $$Return field.
