Domino 5 playing hide and seek on a Win2k Server

We have Domino 5 running as an automatic service on a Windows 2000 Server. It is running fine, but I cannot display the console, and it is not shown as an application in the Task Manager (though the processes show). The service is set to run as a specific user account but setting it to run as Local System does not display it either.

I took a test server where the Domino R5 Server service did display, changed it to run under a specific account and it disappeared. Setting it back to run under Local System does not fix it. If it runs as a program, it does display.

Any ideas? I struck out on MS Knowledge Base but wasn't convinced I put together a good query.
I do know that the console is finicky. As a rule (for Windows) Domino should be run as a service using the System account. I don't know how to get the console back outside of a server reinstall.
