How does a DECS DB work with Notes?

I am trying to integrate a Notes DB with Oracle. On Query Save, the field info needs to be pushed to an Oracle table. Since it's a real-time transaction, I thought DECS is a good bet. Could you please tell me the requirements for the connectivity? I have loaded the DECS DB on the Notes Server. Does that server need to have the Oracle client installed on it? Do I need anything other than an Oracle driver, DSN and a DECS DB? I keep getting browser error messages alternatively from the Oracle or Notes side. Please advise. (I read all sorts of help that skip the requirements, so your direct answer will be highly appreciated, as opposed to referring me to any help documentation.)
You definitely need to install the Oracle Client Interface (OCI) software on the Domino server that runs DECS and serves your Notes application. You will also want to install the OCI on your development system, so that you can perform PL/SQL queries and metadata mapping. Having the vendor's interface software installed is required for all the Lotus connectors -- they provide a common gateway, by complying with the connector API, for DECS and LEI to communicate with a vendor's API. Think of the connector as the name implies -- it connects the Lotus product (DECS or LEI) to the vendor's product (in your case, that's Oracle). Please note that Lotus differentiates between Oracle 7 (-) and Oracle 8 (+) by providing two different connectors for each. Ensure that you choose the correct connector when defining your connection documents.
