How to back up an active mail database

We are running Domino R5 with Notes. We can only back up .nsf mail databases that are not currently in use. We get a lot of spam, and since the Domino server is always running, it's constantly pumping spam into our mailboxes, and those mail databases are then classified as active, which precludes our backing them up.

How do you back up an active mail database? Do I need to stop the server each time and manually copy the files to another location each time?

You have two choices: stop the service, perform a backup, and restart the Domino service; or, buy a backup program and its associated Lotus Domino agent, which has the ability to back up your open files.

I advise people to buy the product with the Domino agent. But if you can't afford it, the first option works.
