How to prevent data duplication?

I created a database inventory using R5Domino for our company. The database is very simple: All users can access my database and the database accepts all records, even the data or information that is composed to duplicate. How can I prevent this duplicated data?
Make one field (at least) the "key" field, say, a part number. Create a view in the database of all documents, with the first column being the part number, sorted. In the QuerySave event, do a view.GetDocumentByKey(partnumber, True) on this view. If it comes back with a document, don't let them save it (set Continue to False). If it doesn't come back with a document (doc=Nothing) then allow it to save (Continue = True).
