Inherit from response to parent

I am developing a worldwide laboratory job database. The job form has a response form "Change to Target Date" that inherits a lot of fields from the parent doc. Users enter the changed target date in response and it mails the appropriate laboratory manager. How can I force (by formula) a backwards or upwards if you will inherit back into the job form so that the job form now shows the new target date specified in the raised response? Or can you only inherit down from parent to response?
You can use the formula @SetDocField. The following example performs the type of operation you are looking for.
  @SetDocField($Ref;
"TargetDate"; NewTargetDate)
