Integrating Domino apps from 5.0.10 with MS SQL database

I have Domino 5.0.10 on AIX 4.3.3. I have developed various Domino applications that are intended to be accessed by Web. I need to integrate some of these Domino apps with MS SQL databases, but I cannot do that using DECS. Are there any other solutions (no LEI) to resolve this problem?
The problem with MS SQL and the Lotus Connector (though this has really nothing to do with Lotus and everything to do with MS) is that they rely on Windows APIs and a re-hashed ODBC interface. Trying to get any of this stuff to work on AIX or anything else other than Linux today is, in most cases, impossible. You might investigate Java & JDBC, but MS is not too big on Java so support may be limited.
