I work on a Lotus Domino support team doing mainly presales configuration support and light post sales. I just completed my R5 CLP Administration via the 4.x and R5 updates. My support areas are also with Microsoft Server products, Citrix and Nortel network products. I really enjoy Notes/Domino and would like to finally focus on one thing and advance my career. Most of the Lotus jobs I see in the newspaper in are in development. Should I continue my certification in application development? What trends do you see?
There seems to be more demand for developers; however, it seems tougher to get into. The money for junior to mid level developers is greater than for junior to mid level administrators. Once you get to the expert level, the money gets much closer.
My recommendation is to land your first job as a Domino administrator as soon as you can. Then after you feel comfortable with that technology, begin taking development classes. Many developers begin as administrators and you can make this transition too.
The trends I see still favor the developers but strong Domino administrators with security expertise or very large scale (10,000 users) experience are becoming more valuable.
