Mail showing up unread after being opened

We recently upgraded our servers to 5.0.12. We have now received calls from users that some of their inbox mail is showing up unread after they have opened it. Any idea what may be causing this? We compact our servers once a week. I thought it might be that. We have asked the users to delete cache.dsk and desktop5.dsk. This only works temporarily.
I know there were problems with this in R5, especially after Compact –B was issued or even if something happened with the nightly backups. I would look there for some clues.

I know that there is an issue that is fixed in 5.0.13a that addresses sessions not being closed (hung sessions). If I recall correctly this is related to the mail poll interval. We would see the unread counts reset when the server would crash with sessions hung. This may be related to that issue.

Why not tell them the truth? Unread marks sucks...really. Every once in a while I see a read mail suddenly show up as un-read, and I´m on 6.5.3.

And when you cluster mailfiles -- boy, it gets even worse. But somehow users manage to live with it.

Keep up the good work!
