Migrating the server but not the client

I am migrating a client who runs 4.5 clients on 5.x server. They want to only migrate the server to 6.5 and keep the client at 4.5, because they are moving off Notes in one year. I think it's also because if they go beyond one year, they want continued support from Lotus. Are their any published migration notes/white papers on moving servers to 6.5 with the client in the older release? Any help is appreciated.
I haven't seen anything from IBM on this, but the process should be fairly similar. Obviously this will require some major testing, and no templates can be changed. At that point, I don't know if it is worth the effort of going to 6.5. Templates such as the directory, mail, admin4.nsf, etc., will require a 6.x client to properly configure and use them. At least the administration team would require six clients. Personally, if they are going to dump Domino, I would suggest not moving the server. It's effort and expense they don't need or want.
