Return back to view after editing/reading/submitting a document

I would like to return back to the view from which I came from when reading, editing or submitting a document. I tried the HTTP_Referer CGI variable but if I read a document and then edit the value is cleared. I tried the history.go() function but you have to know how far you have to go back and that can change throughout the life of the document. I would like to be able to find the value of the last view in the history function thru JavaScript but I have not been successful. I do not want to use frames to store the value. Can you please help me with a solution?
I would normally use frames to do this.. You could "save" the HTTP_Referer variable in a hidden field that gets passed along so that you know where to go back to, or tack the name of the view you are coming from onto the query string and pass it along so that you would know how to get back.
