Domino-based suite wins LinuxWorld award

IBM Small Business Suite for Linux won Best of Show at LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in New York. The Suite features Domino and Websphere Application Servers, DB2 Universal Database, and IBM Suite Installer. IBM zSeries 900 also won Best Hardware for Linux World. IBM Small Business Server for Linux delivers an integrated, full-featured web solution designed for small businesses seeking to put their business on the web.

Text to speech application designed for Lotus Notes

TOPCALL Corp., Malvern, Pa., a provider of unified communication solutions, has developed a new product, called TC/VoiceAccess, an integrated text-to-speech application designed for mobile users of Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange. The company said the innovation is a step towards achieving the vision of one platform for business communication processing. TC/VoiceAccess allows users to reach staff away from the office. All that is needed is a telephone to provide mobile users immediate access to voice, fax and e-mail messages stored in their unified mailbox. Fax and e-mail messages are either read by the latest text-to-speech technology or alternatively can be sent to any fax machine, such as hotel reception desk. The necessary conversions are handled automatically by the system.

Metamail Reader available for Outlook Express

Metamail Inc., an e-mail publisher in Toronto, Canada, has released its Metamail Reader for Microsoft Outlook Express and Qualcomm Eudora. The new release brings Metamail to the millions of Microsoft Outlook Express users. Metamail brings a whole new visual dimension to e-mail, the Internet's most popular application. Metamail's photo-realistic message format enables electronic marketers, call center operators, systems integrators and customer relationship management vendors to deliver dynamic looking WYSIWYG e-mail documents complete with graphics, logos, signatures, photos, file attachments, richly textured papers and more. Reader extensions for Netscape Mail, Lotus Notes and Novell GroupWise are to follow. It is available from the Metamail web site as a free, one-time download.

Kasten Chase and Research In Motion work with DOD

Kasten Chase, a data security systems provider in Sterling, Va., and Research In Motion Ltd., a mobile communications company in Waterloo, Canada, are providing secure wireless access to the federal Defense Message System via RIM's BlackBerry wireless e-mail solution. Kasten Chase will integrate its RASP Data Security for wireless applications and message handling software with BlackBerry to provide secure access to DMS. The integrated solution will be designed to meet government standards for remote access to DMS. Under the terms of the agreement, Kasten Chase will also market the solution to government end-user organizations and select BlackBerry government resellers. DMS is a global messaging system for military and intelligence communities. The system was first designed for the allied countries and has been used by governments in the United States, Great Britain and Canada. Within the U.S. Department of Defense, the Defense Information System Agency started using DMS in 1988.

Meridian Knowledge Solutions creates online university

Meridian Knowledge Solutions Inc., a provider of web technologies for e-learning in Chantilly, Va., has developed an online learning and knowledge management system for AstraZeneca, a pharmaceutical company, headquartered in London with its U.S. headquarters in Wilmington, Del. In the U.S., AstraZeneca is using Meridian KSI's Knowledge Centre as its corporate university, AstraZeneca University. It provides a central point of access for both online and classroom-based training and development opportunities, from drug development to field sales and marketing to operations, each of which represents a college within the virtual university. The site enables collaboration between teams by offering a unique tool to share information, Meridian Knowledge Solutions officials said.
